For It Is In Giving That We ReceiveNurses provide care to a dying colleague
Northern Michigan University. Our colleague, Sharon, wanted to die at her camp far away from hospitals and machines. Helping her to die demonstrated how caring is a reciprocal process. As we gave Sharon help and support, wereceived much in return. Sharon helped us to grow as we coped with her dying. This anecdotal story describes specific caring behaviors and communication skills used by the team members to help Sharon and each other grow during the terminal stages of her illness.
