An educational model for explaining hospice services

Thomas A. Welk, DMin

Education, Hospice, Inc., Wichita, Kansas

Explaining the concept and philosophy of hospice can be difficult. There is a reluctance in our society to openly address dyingldeath issues; there is a reluctance on the part of many healthcare professionals to look beyond physical issues.

The following model has been used successfully to explain hospice to both the generalpublic and health care professionals. It is not intended to introduce hospice to a patientlfamily during the initial referrallassessment visit.
